Message from the Principal

IMG_4023.jpg

Last week, I was interviewed to talk about “A good school from my perspective”. In my opinion, a good school boosts pupils’ learning and enthusiasm for life where pupils and teachers have opportunities to show their highlights.

A good school is committed to implementing whole-person education and continues to practice. School vision and mission are closely connected by cultivating talent through virtue, kindness, and integrity. In the meantime, a good school also encourages pupils to work hard and have a good habit of reflecting, promoting academic excellence.

A good school focuses on learning, embedding a deep understanding of its history and culture, identity and a sense of mission. Facing the world and the future, schools develop pupils’ broader vision and prepare them for the future.

The beauty of education is that our pupils can make achievements by helping others. Currently, our Primary and Junior High pupils are developing a Mentoring Program. The program aims to select pupils with all-round development from each grade and provide them with mentoring for better growth. At the same time, these pupils need to practice leadership / participate in pupil activities or projects to motivate more peers to challenge themselves and become excellent. Throughout the program, pupils will continue to improve their self-management ability and enhance the awareness of helping others and the spirit of serving the community.

As I mentioned last week, sometimes adversity can better unite people. In this challenging stage, the government, the school, faculty, and parents face significant challenges. However, we all work together to overcome these difficulties. It is also a learning opportunity for pupils to experience life’s challenges and learn how to calmly deal with particular situations, echoing the essence of education. They will recall this experience and remember the responsibility and unity our community demonstrated in the future.

评估周

Assessment week

After the Winter Break, pupils will be sitting their mock examinations from (3 - 10 January). It is an opportunity for pupils and teachers to assess pupils’ understanding and learn what needs to be improved on for the external assessments in summer and for pupils to gain experience of what taking the examinations will feel like. It can be stressful for pupils as they study hard and try to cram as much as possible in preparation for the examinations. It is important to strike a balance between studying hard, studying smart, and studying and resting.

Studying hard vs smart studying

Pupils can spend hours away at their desks engrossed in their notes and textbooks but still struggle when it comes to writing down their answers on the examination papers. So instead of dedicating just time to the studying cause, pupils must also be organised and plan their studying well. This may look different in different subjects, but smart studying will target particular areas of knowledge or skills so that the process of studying is broken down into smaller and more manageable chunks.

Suggestions for studying smart

Self assessments

Before settling into studying, pupils would benefit from self-assessment to ascertain their strengths and weaknesses. This can include a list of all the topics they need to know and then judge how well they think they understand each topic. For example, they can ‘traffic light’ each skill where ‘green’ means they understand it well, ‘yellow’ means that they understand the topic to some degree, and ‘red’ means that you have little or no understanding of the topic.

Hatty1.png

Pupils then gain a picture of their current understanding and target their weaker areas (red and yellow) first.

Flashcards

These are useful tools when needing to learn definitions or short answers. For example, you could have a question on one side with the answer on the back like this:

Hatty2.png

Or you could use pictures to help you remember:

Doing not reading

Many pupils think that reading notes is an effective way of studying. However, what pupils need to do in examination conditions is not recognise something but recall the information. This means that pupils need to practise exam-style questions to get a feel of how they will be assessed. If the pupils are familiar with the language, the examination style layout, and the type of questions they will be asked before the assessment, they will feel more at ease when sitting the paper. Pupils need to ask their subject teachers for examination-style practice questions and their answers so they can practise in their own time and assess their understanding.

Balancing study and rest

Dr. Bea from the Cleveland Clinic likens our brains to sponges. He says that “they can only soak up so much information before they’re saturated, then they have to dry out a bit.” Hence the brain needs frequent rest. Research has found that taking breaks can improve your mood, boost your performance and increase your ability to concentrate and pay attention. However, it doesn’t work as efficiently when you don’t give your mind a chance to pause and refresh. So my advice is to space out your revision rather than cramming it all together. For example, if you organise five hours of study into one hour a day, you’ll remember more than if you study for five hours on one day. Form tutors have been working with pupils to create manageable revision timetables.

The most important point to remember is that we have mock examinations to help prepare our pupils. After Assessment Week, pupils must reflect on their experiences and note what went well and how they could improve for the actual examinations. Of course, it is not realistic to expect 100% in every exam, but we hope that pupils want to do themselves justice and try their very best, knowing that their teachers will support them every step of the way.

The Global Catalyst competition projects ran across Junior High for over two weeks. Several of our Grade 8 and 9 pupils are carrying out various projects such as selling flowers and pens or reusing unwanted books from home to raise awareness for those less fortunate than ourselves and raise money for charity.

Their enthusiasm to ensure inclusivity and develop their leadership skills has been admirable. The results of this competition will be available next week, and we look forward to sharing the good news of the success of our pupils.

Upper Primary Matters

This week I am proud to say that our Grade 3 pupils gave an excellent speech on independence in our whole school Flag Raising ceremony. Our young speakers reminded us of how independence happens naturally, in nature, when young animals are left to fend for themselves. They highlighted how survival could be cruel, but their challenges to become independent make them stronger as a species – survival of the fittest.

As human civilisation evolves, we still rely on our communities to support our independence. We use parenting and schooling to guide our young to gain the skills needed to be well-functioning teenagers and adults. Here at Hiba, it is rewarding when we see pupils exhibit the values that we embed that are part of the foundations of our school. Many of our pupils will evolve to be positive role models in our communities and exhibit them independently with integrity.

IMG_4834.jpg

Furthermore, I see pupils overcoming their challenges in becoming independent daily. I see collaboration between them to support and encourage each other rather than condemn and critique. Hiba school focuses on wellbeing and nurturing pupil growth, and this is ever more important as we help them manage their time in a fast-paced world.

Within our lower primary school, we instil a secure foundation of conceptual understanding in mathematics within our pupils. Conceptual understanding can be described as an integrated and functional grasp of mathematical ideas. Pupils with a conceptual understanding know more than isolated facts and methods about the subject. They understand why a mathematical theory is important, how to apply it in solving real problems and how to identify the contexts in which it is useful. When a child is fully independent in their thinking and processing of their conceptual understanding, they can arrange and organise their knowledge logically, enabling them to process and learn new ideas by making connections with past experiences and understanding what they already know.

Positive impact on pupils:

  01

Interaction with concrete materials enhances student retention of stepwise procedural options in mathematical problem-solving.

  02

Provides an opportunity for increased interaction with content and increased response frequency for all pupils.

  03

Methods to teach place value, fractions, addition, subtraction, multiplication, algebra, and word problems are supported by research.

Conceptual understanding in mathematics builds on the individual child’s thinking and processing. It moves between concrete and abstract and can return to the concrete or pictorial representation stage when introducing new concepts, adding a challenge, or if a pupil is not feeling secure about a new concept or skill. Manipulatives are available for all pupils and encouraged to solve maths problems within our learning environment.

This week, we empowered our pupils’ creativity with an exciting writing competition that challenged pupils to explore the theme of travel in a written article. Congratulations to our winners: Dora C (3rd place), Walter L (2nd place) and Karen Z (1st place). All worked exceptionally hard and wrote a fantastic trio of articles. Our three winners showed great diversity in the content of their articles and were fully engaged with the subject. We feel fortunate to have such creative, talented students in the English department. The December writing competition is already well underway: a personal narrative entitled ‘Oops!’ encourages pupils to write creatively about their mistakes and the lessons they learned. So please do encourage learners to get involved and submit their entries this December. We love reading them and look forward to three brand-new winners very soon.

The World Scholar’s Cup 2021 was due to take place in Ningbo this week, with a large number of talented students travelling to pit their wits, persuasive writing and problem-solving skills against pupils from all over China. The department has been working closely with pupils to hone their collaborative writing and debating skills. Stay tuned – we hope to reschedule the visit for early next year.

The Chinese New Year Gala auditions are now closed, and we received over 180 videos submissions. We are amazed by the skills and talents of our pupils and touched by their passion for performing arts.

We review each video and will contact all parents with the decision on Friday, 24 December. At Hiba Academy Hangzhou, we endeavour to offer our pupils opportunities to showcase their passion for performing arts. Unfortunately, we have limited spaces for solo performances for the Chinese New Year Gala. Therefore, we will offer most pupils an opportunity to perform during the second semester (Spring Recital or Summer Concert).
