Message from the Principal

Towards the end of the term, the pupils are busy with the final examinations and the review and reflection after the tests. In Hiba school, we encourage pupils to pay attention to the reflection on the assessment results and learning process rather than the assessment results themselves. German poet Heine once said: "reflection is a mirror, which can reflect our mistakes and give us a chance to correct them." Confucius Zengzi once said, "I will examine myself three times a day." People who are good at reflection will observe and analyse things, their behaviours and ideas to improve their behaviours and make things develop in a better direction. Through reflection, we can find the deficiencies of knowledge structure or skills, promote a deeper understanding of existing cognition and improve skills, and hope that Hiba pupils can continuously develop their comprehensive learning ability through reflection.

This week, the excellent news is that Grade 5 to Grade 8 students got good results again in the American Mathematics Competition (AMC 8). Hiba's pupils once again proved their excellent academic ability and Hiba's innovative educational philosophy and efficient teaching methods with their strengths. Congratulations to all the pupils.

Some students in Grade 10 and Pre A Level have completed on-campus internships after finishing their IGCSE examinations. Through the practical experience of school work, they have improved their understanding of the work content of the school staff and a deeper understanding of life. On Wednesday, the school held a lecture on pupils' career development - "how to become a successful investor", which provided pupils with more opportunities to learn about different industries and fields through the sharing of external experts, and helped pupils better plan their future learning and career development path.

The long-awaited musical "Seussical Jr." will be staged next week to showcase the pupils' hard work throughout the school year, and we wish them every success.

Have a joyful weekend.

Sixth Form Matters

As this academic year draws to a close, we not only reflect on the past year's events but also look forward to the new year. 2022-23 will be a momentous occasion for us as the pupils complete the final chapter of their secondary education. When building a new section of a school, naturally, practical decisions are made about academic programmes and learning environments. We have, for example, chosen the A Level programme for its academic rigour and challenge and its recognised status as the gold standard of English education. However, the intangible components that make a successful and happy learning environment are just as important as the practical ones. In the example of buying a house, owning the property would be the practical solution; however, making the house a home would be the intangible component that would lead to a happier living solution. So how do we build our Sixth Form to be a 'home' for our pupils?

01

校风Ethos

We are setting a clear ethos for our Sixth Form Wellingtonians, based on integrity, trying one's best and mutual respect. We have high expectations of our pupils, just as our pupils will have of us. We will work together to build OUR Sixth Form.

02

Relationships

Pupils who have completed Sixth Form education usually state that the relationships they developed during this experience are ones they will treasure long term. Pupils' friendship circles widen and deepen as learners find themselves in classes with others they may not have previously spent much time with. The smaller class sizes lead to different relationships with teachers. Learners discover that their voices in class discussions become more important, opportunities to follow conversations through different tangents increase, and their bond over the shared academic interest strengthens.

03

Privileges and responsibility

As young adults on the brink of higher education abroad, we recognise that rules that apply to younger pupils are not always applicable to everyone. Therefore, the Sixth Form pupils will enjoy some new privileges. However, the pupils can exercise further responsibility alongside these benefits. The balance of privileges and responsibility will help prepare our Wellingtonians for life beyond high school.

I am very excited to be extending the academic 'home' for our pupils into the Sixth Form next year, and though we are yet to see this year out, I am already looking forward to the next.

Your Imperial Taster | Earth Science and Engineering | Silent earthquakes: how do we study them?

Subduction zones are located where one of the Earth's tectonic plates slides beneath another – the boundary between the tectonic plates is called the plate boundary fault. These plate boundary faults can generate the most significant earthquakes and tsunamis on Earth, such as Japan's 2011 magnitude 9.0 earthquake. However, in the last two decades, an entirely new type of seismic phenomenon has been discovered in subduction zones: silent earthquakes or slow slip events. These 'silent' earthquakes happen over several weeks or even months, and there can be no ground shaking. In this lecture, we discuss why this discovery has turned the field of seismology upside down and how we study these strange earthquakes.

As we end our assessment weeks for the academic year 2021-22, we celebrate the progress our pupils have made this year. Watching their English vocabulary flourish, use of Chinese expand, mathematic ability soar and their science knowledge cement has been wonderful. Walking into lessons and watching the confidence our pupils have, along with the drive and motivation to move forward, is awe-inspiring. They continue striving to be the best they can be and look forward to how today's education will shape their future. As their assessments are marked and moderated by our specialist teams, we conduct statistical analysis to ensure that our curriculum is constantly adapting to the needs of our pupils and that stretch and challenge are the focus of all subjects for all pupils.

As the end of this academic year approaches, we are reminded of how far our pupils have come on their learning journey. Despite restrictions, it has been a rewarding year filled with many accomplishments. A few things that come to mind are how we have built resilience and compassion through our wellbeing lessons and weekly assemblies. In our assemblies, pupils prepared and presented unique messages. This week, class 3E gave an assembly that allowed us to reflect on who and what inspires us. Their question-and-answer session made us realise that a spectrum of people influences us, and we are inspirations to each other in various ways.

As a teacher, we want to light that spark in each pupil, to encourage and help them discover their passions and talents and follow their dreams so that their lives are vibrant. The inspirational, educational speaker, Ken Robinson, has inspired many of us to move away from traditional models of teaching and transform education so that each generation of learners can grow into adults that can and will move us forward on a technological and ecological path of growth.

The following quote gives us more insight into why inspiring people to love what they do is important:

"

When you're in your Element, your sense of time changes. If you're doing something that you love, an hour can feel like five minutes; if you are doing something that you do not, five minutes can feel like an hour.

"

This school year has passed in what seems to be the blink of an eye. I put that down to the pupils who have enriched our lives and the teachers who continue to inspire pupils and adults around the school with their rich experiences and diverse passions for teaching the subject areas that they love – Thank you all for making this a year to remember.

Our summer break is a time for our children to relax, take a break from the hard work that happened over the year and have some fun. However, it is important to also reflect on the learning over the previous year to ensure that our children are ready for what is to come. It is also important to discuss what to expect and plan for what is to come.

Your child will receive their end-of-year Progress Report and comments from their class teachers with suggestions for reading projects and more. Using this information and asking your child's class teachers questions before the summer break will help ensure your child has an excellent foundation going into the new year. Reading is always a good way to exercise the mind and practice skills our children gain. Set aside some time each day for reading an interesting book. The Hangzhou Public Library is a fascinating place with many publications. Our Wellington College Hangzhou Online Library platform is also a fantastic source with an unlimited number of books available. Please check that you have access to the platform and let our Library know if you need any support in accessing this.

We are looking forward to celebrating the final few weeks with our children.

This week the sports department had the pleasure of hosting the 2021/22 sports presentation.
