Message from the Principal

The key word of this week is resilience. During this week’s flag raising ceremony, Mr. David Mackinnon, Head of Pastoral and Ms. Carina Ma, Deputy Head of Pastoral gave a presentation on Resilience to all pupils and staff.

Resilience is the ability to adapt to difficult situations. When stress, adversity or trauma strikes, you still experience anger, grief and pain, but you're able to keep functioning — both physically and psychologically. Resilience will not make your problems go away — but it can give you the ability to see past them, find enjoyment in life and better handle stress.

A famous Chinese American psychologist Angela Lee Duckworth conducted some research and found that one characteristic as a significant predictor of success is not intelligence, social ability, good looks or physical health. It is grit, or resilience.

How can we build resilience? Mr. David Mackinnon and Ms. Carina Ma shared six tips. First, get connected. Second, make every day meaningful. Third, learn from experience. Think of how you have coped with hardships in the past. Consider the skills and strategies that helped you through difficult times. Fourth, remain hopeful. Fifth, take care of yourself. Tend to your own needs and feelings. Finally, be proactive.

You are not born with a fixed amount of resilience. I hope our pupils have a growth mindset, to face the adversities in their lives and study, see every failure and obstacle as a chance to grow, and be courageous and passionate in the pursuit of their dreams.

Sixth Form Matters

Choosing which A Levels to study in Sixth Form is a big decision for pupils and the process is different for everyone. There are pupils who know exactly what they want to study, those who have an idea but are unsure about the high demands of courses and there are also those individuals who do not know where to start. I would like to address the last group of students first by reassuring them that it is perfectly normal to be undecided about academic futures at the age of 16. Here are a few student profiles to help you choose your A Level subjects:

Student A - knows what she wants to study at university but not which A Levels

Advice: Student A should go onto universities' websites and look for the undergraduate course she is interested in, then search for 'entry requirements'. Here universities may outline their compulsory or preferred A Level subjects for their applicants. If the course does not require any specific subjects then Student A should choose what she enjoys and stands the best chance of success in.

Student B - he does not know what to study at university or for A Levels

Advice: Student B should complete personality and competency tests on Unifrog to gain insight into preferred careers and academic pathways. After completing this, he should consult with a university adviser about which subjects would best suit his personality, academic interests and strengths.

Student C - he knows what to study at university but the corresponding A Level subject is not on offer

Advice: Our A Level programme has been carefully designed to enable students to progress to a wide variety of undergraduate degrees, keeping all doors open to higher education pathways. Courses such as Psychology and Computer Science, despite their titles, do not require their A Level counterparts as prerequisites. In fact, for these courses the compulsory subject is often Mathematics. Further details on entry requirements can be found on each universities' websites.

My advice is always for pupils to choose what they enjoy and what they can succeed in. There is no easy option in Sixth Form, all subjects are difficult which is why it is imperative that students enjoy their subjects. If they love their subjects, studying will always be a joy and pupils will become lifelong learners.

Preparing our pupils for the next stage of their education is an integral part of our Hiba education. This week has included the first in our series of transition meetings for our Grade 6 pupils. We look forward to our future sessions for our Grade 6 parents to ensure that both our families and our pupils are ready for the next step in their academic journey at Hiba. Our Grade 9 and 10 pupils this week have been preparing for university, with the first in a series of lectures from universities around the world focusing on The University of California, Santa Cruz, America. These lectures and workshops enable our pupils to make informed decisions regarding their future and increase their understanding of the admission requirements of the United States and what academic campus life is like at university.

Upper primary held four coffee events with parents from different year groups this week. Parents had constructive communication with the school leadership team and teachers. Through these activities, parents gain a further understanding of the school curriculum, teaching strategies, assessment and holistic education as well as the important information related to pupil’s growth. Curriculum and teaching quality are the two key factors to the success of any school, but parents’ trust is also a core aspect to the success. As a young school, how to win the trust of the society and parents is the focus of our school this semester.

This week 6B pupils invited 2C for a reading picnic. The pupils were given the opportunity to explore our school library and borrow a selection of English and Chinese books to share. They then took their books, a blanket and a snack to enjoy the fresh autumn weather whilst instilling a love of literature in the younger pupils.  It was a pleasure to witness them sharing their passion for reading and supporting others.

The important 1-1 parent teacher conference will take place from next Wednesday 3 - 5 November. The QR code for core subjects PTC booking system has been sent by the Chinese teachers via Tchat. Please do sign up in advance if you have not already. Research shows that parent engagement in children’s school life has a great impact on children’s learning progress. We encourage parents to actively participate in school’s communication to further understand pupils’ school life and better support pupil’s growth. We believe, through communication, parents ask questions and express their concerns, then parents and school will build a close trustworthy relationship. In this process, children are the biggest beneficiaries.

Looking forward to meeting you in school next week.

At Hiba Academy Hangzhou we celebrate quality partnerships in learning and understand that this requires a reciprocal commitment from staff and parents to work together to improve pupil learning and wellbeing.

Learning is not limited to the classroom. Our belief is that the expectations and experience of our families are powerful determinants in our pupil’s achievement. Understanding how the school work towards meeting individual pupils needs, how home life and community contribute to learning helps cultivate a holistic learning environment for all that are part of Hiba.

Through our upcoming parent teacher conferences, we hope that the engagement through learning partnerships which will further support our children in achieving excellence.

Points to consider in preparing to meet your child’s classroom teachers on Friday 5 November:

How can I, as a parent support and be positively engaged with my child's learning, at home and at school?

How can teachers and parents work together to help the children to learn?

How does the school find out what would help the children achieve their goals?

How do teachers seek to understand and learn about pupils, including their home life and background?

How can I as a parent better support my child’s teachers?

We are looking forward to welcoming you into our school, classroom end environment very soon.
