At Senior School, we view mathematics as far more than a standalone subject—it is the foundation of critical thinking, problem-solving and innovation. Our Maths curriculum is meticulously designed to challenge pupils intellectually while equipping them with the skills necessary to thrive in an increasingly complex, data-driven world. By integrating the best of Shanghai Maths, IGCSE Maths, A Level Maths and Further Maths, and Singapore Maths methodologies, we offer a dynamic and comprehensive learning experience that prepares pupils for global academic and professional success.

Our Maths programme is structured to provide a seamless progression from foundational concepts to advanced studies, ensuring pupils develop both conceptual mastery and practical problem-solving abilities. One of the key strengths of our curriculum is its unique fusion of educational approaches.

Drawing from the Shanghai Maths tradition, we emphasise deep conceptual understanding, mental arithmetic and systematic problem-solving techniques. This approach ensures pupils build a robust foundation, characterised by precision and mastery. Complementing this, our IGCSE and A Level components introduce pupils to a broad range of mathematical topics, including statistics, mechanics and decision mathematics, all framed within real-world applications. This dual focus not only aligns with international standards but also prepares pupils for the diverse challenges they will encounter in higher education and beyond.

To further enhance learning, we incorporate Singapore Maths resources, renowned for their visual and hands-on techniques. Methods such as bar modelling and the concrete-pictorial-abstract approach help pupils grasp abstract concepts more clearly, making problem-solving more intuitive and engaging.

Tailored Pathways for Diverse Aspirations

Recognising that pupils have varying strengths and ambitions, we offer multiple pathways within our Maths programme. At the IGCSE level, pupils can choose between Core and Extended Mathematics, ensuring that everyone is appropriately challenged. The Core pathway provides a solid foundation in essential mathematical skills, while the Extended pathway delves into advanced topics such as algebra, trigonometry and calculus, catering to high-achieving pupils.

For pupils pursuing A Levels, we offer both Mathematics and Further Mathematics. The A Level Mathematics course covers pure maths, mechanics and statistics, making it ideal for those aiming for careers in engineering, economics or the sciences. Meanwhile, A Level Further Mathematics is designed for pupils aiming for top-tier universities in fields such as mathematics, physics or computer science. This course explores advanced pure maths, discrete topics, and further mechanics and statistics, providing an unparalleled depth of study.

Innovative and Engaging Teaching Methods

Our lessons are designed to be interactive, pupil-centred and intellectually stimulating. We leverage a variety of teaching strategies to bring mathematics to life. Hands-on activities, such as using manipulatives and digital tools like Desmos and GeoGebra, allow pupils to explore mathematical concepts visually and dynamically. Real-world case studies demonstrate the practical applications of maths, making learning more relevant and engaging.

Collaborative problem-solving is another cornerstone of our approach. Group tasks encourage pupils to discuss strategies, debate solutions, and justify their methods, fostering a deeper understanding of the subject. This collaborative environment not only enhances learning but also builds teamwork and critical thinking skills.

Cultivating Confident Communicators

In today's world, mathematical proficiency is not just about solving problems—it is also about articulating ideas clearly and persuasively. At Wellington College Education (China) - Hangzhou, we place a strong emphasis on oracy and communication within our Maths lessons.

Through activities such as Harkness group discussion activities, pupils learn to defend their solutions using logical reasoning and evidence. Peer teaching and presentations further enhance their ability to explain complex concepts clearly. Teachers use questioning techniques to encourage pupils to articulate their thinking, thereby refining their analytical and communication skills. These practices ensure that our pupils are not only adept mathematicians but also confident communicators, capable of presenting and defending their ideas effectively.

Enrichment Beyond the Classroom

Learning at Wellington College Education (China) - Hangzhou extends far beyond traditional classroom instruction. Pupils are encouraged to participate in a variety of enrichment activities that deepen their love of mathematics and sharpen their competitive edge.

Our pupils regularly participate in prestigious Maths Olympiads, including the UKMT, the American Mathematics Competitions, and the Mathleague Team Competition, where they tackle complex problems and compete with peers from around the world.

In the recently concluded October 2025 UKMT Senior Mathematical Challenge (SMC, for Grade 12 and below), multiple pupils from Wellington College Education (China) - Hangzhou earned global distinctions, including Gold and Silver Awards. Notably, several Grade 9 and 10 pupils demonstrated exceptional performance by competing across year groups in this senior-level contest and secured outstanding results.
