Every admissions season, many families ask the same question: why do some pupils with outstanding grades still struggle to secure places at universities such as Oxford or Cambridge? In reality, academic results are only the starting point for these institutions. What ultimately distinguishes successful applicants is whether they demonstrate genuine intellectual curiosity, strong critical thinking skills, and the potential to pursue academic inquiry at a deeper level.
For families planning international academic pathways, understanding what leading universities truly look for—and how pupils can begin developing these qualities during their school years—is often one of the most important steps in long-term educational planning.
On 27 March, Wellington College Education (China) – Hangzhou will welcome an admissions officer from University of Oxford, Arhat Virdi, for an on-campus visit and exchange with pupils and parents.

Mr Virdi's academic career spans several of the world's leading institutions, and he has long been engaged in teaching and research within top international academic environments. Through this experience, he has developed deep insight into global higher education trends as well as the ways in which leading universities identify and nurture academic talent.
This visit also reflects the ongoing commitment of Wellington College Education (China) – Hangzhou to connecting pupils and families with high-quality global educational resources. With the support of our partner, China CITIC Bank, we are honoured to invite Mr Virdi to engage directly with our community. We firmly believe that education for the future extends beyond classroom learning; it involves helping pupils develop independent thinking and a broad understanding of the world. When pupils and parents are able to engage directly with scholars and admissions representatives from leading universities, they gain a more authentic understanding of these institutions' academic values and can reflect more thoughtfully on long-term educational pathways.

As part of his visit, Mr Virdi will deliver a special lecture for parents in the afternoon, offering insights into how University of Oxford and other leading institutions approach talent development and student selection. Drawing on his experience teaching and researching within top academic institutions, he will discuss how expectations for future talent are evolving and how pupils can gradually develop academic interests, critical thinking, and sustained intellectual motivation throughout their secondary education. For families wishing to better understand pathways to leading universities, this session will offer a rare first-hand perspective.
